Does anybody know if there's a way to download videos from webshots and
store them in your pc?

If you use Firefox as your browser there are a number of what it calls extensions (small code segments that add functionality to the basic browser) that you can use to 'grab' embedded videos from YouTube, MySpace, Google video, Webshots etc.  I have found the UnPlug extension works most reliably on a range of sites (although Video Downloader and Fast Video Download work too).

Almost all of these sites convert uploaded files into Flash movies with a .flv file extension - probably to try to prevent people doing just this - and that is what extensions like UnPlug look for in the HTML code and fetch for you.

You can play these Flash movies with some video players (the freeware VLC for Windows, for example) but I choose to convert them to the more usable MPEG format using MediaCoder, a free video/audio converter that you can get from Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net ).

Once in MPEG format you can then choose to edit them in Movie Maker or Virtual Dub, for example. If a video is 'on its side' I can rotate it in Virtual Dub, or cut out irrelevant sections, or adjust its brightness/contrast, or splice related videos, or ...

It's all a bit fiddly but once you have the right tools it is not so hard; it takes longer to download a video file than it does to convert it.

P.S. I use Windows so of course all the tools I use are for Windows, but you will probably find equivalents for Mac, *nix etc.

P.P.S. This also works of course with any .flv files that you download from the Archive on this site.
