Ultimate shoulder rides

Scotty, it was good to hear from you again, although you must be very frustrated by the nanny state syndrome. It's not a lot better here in London - the system is closing in on us too.

If you can't enjoy water sports at least savour the cricket! You can imagine that after the drubbing you guys gave us that topic is no longer major news here now.

Still, we do have water; in fact we can now use our hose pipes again, but as it's mid-winter that is not particularly helpful. Come the summer they will no doubt ban them again thereby restricting pool riding opportunites. Sometimes when I reflect back, I realise that as kids we were really rather lucky. I hope you can at least give your nieces a good shoulder ride or two at home. If not there must be a risk that the pleasure will be lost for ever for them.

I passed by a NYC public pool this weekend.  I remembered my post from 2007, and decided to check if shoulder riding was still banned.  Yep, it is.  I spoke to a friendly police officer, and asked him.  He told me yes, that when the police or a lifeguard see it they whistle them down.  So sad what the world has come to.

I just did a google search: "pool rules no chicken fights" - and there are dozens of pages listing public pools who have rules which state no chicken fights.  Wow.  New York is not alone.

I agree. Even in my country SR is often banned in pool.
I don't understand why in USA, UK and many other countries people does SR everywhere and here in Italy I don't see anything, except in concert or similar events. I've been following SR passion for many years and I have noticed from pictures or stories that girls (I don't like WOM or MOM) do SR for fun. Here in Italy I guess that F don't consider SR so much...

I agree with you again, Kit. You were hurting nothing and nobody by bearing tribute to that gal by shoulder carrying her.

That life guard probably stopped you because he was afraid she may fall off your shoulders, get hurt, sue the organization that the life guard was working for, the life guard would get fired, and he would have a hard time finding another job in this tough economy the people of this world live in.

My father said, "People are crazier than anybody."  What is so crazy, in my opinion, is that judges would consent to have such a ridiculous lawsuit in their court room or that laws allow for lawsuits on something this ridiculous.

Many skateboard parks have closed down in California and possibly other places due to ridiculous lawsuits.

Ridiculous lawsuits have help to hurt our economy which hurts many other countries' economies given that our country is the biggest customer of many other countries.

In my opinion, some legislators, judges, most of them also attorneys or former attorneys, and attorneys have worked together to create the possibility for these ridiculous lawsuits so they can profit at the expense of the rest of society.

My father also said, Think of somebody besides yourself!" I wish more would.

This would enable you to shoulder carry that gal like a beloved princess in more places with less hassle which is how I too think things should  be.

Of course, there will always be selfish special interest people creating the opportunity for ridiculous lawsuits such that this will have to be countered by concerted effort by those concerned with the concerns of all, not just their own.


This will take much work and time. Many of us are already short on time. But, will work we still may lessen ridiculous lawsuits in America.

LOL u are probably right Sam but I think the lifeguard may have been jealous, and that may have had something to do with it...

...or to silence the annyoing lifeguard who keeps blowing his whistle she tells him, "Stay cool ok? I'll ride on you afterwards when I am ready with my friend/boyfriend" and then DON'T make it!

This is a lament to me. Our litigious society has taken much of the fun out of many activities. I do not how we all managed to survive our childhood, teens, and young adulthood engaging in these "dangerous" pursuits.

Our area is no different than any of yours in that shoulder riding seems to have been banned in every public pool. Our favorite activity has been banished to backyard, hotel, or some other non-public facility.

It was my favorite summer pasttime going to the local pool and being able to participate in and observe many great shoulder rides. I posted a story in this forum a few years ago about my first memory.

For newer members who may not have seen the post and for those who wish to enjoy it again. I will repost.

"I first became aware of the appeal of this fun activity when, at 11 years old, the 14 year old sister of a friend rode me in the pool. I do not know if it was the experience of having a girl on my shoulders, the fact that she was the perpetrator (it was her idea), or the enthusiasm with which she rode me, but I was hooked from that time. It was an intensely pleasurable experience for me and she must have enjoyed it immensely judging from the length of the ride, her laughter, and the way she tightly wrapped her legs around me."

I have numerous other memories that I will share in this forum.
