I need some advice

Hello riders and carriers, I need some words of wisdom from you guys. I am a horse for many of my female friends as you may be well aware from my stories, but as a horse there's an obstacle that I still need to work on.  Hills. I have never gone down a hill with a girl on my shoulders,  but I have gone up one with a rider riding me, and it took a lot out of me, I made it to the top and I was exhausted,  but I didnt want to show my weariness for the sake of offending her and sparking the thought of her thinking I think she may be fat, (she's not btw) that's a fire no water can extinguish. Anyone have any advice as to how I could give my tired friends a shoulder ride up a hill, or stairs without sucking all the energy out of myself?

Re: I need some advice

From my experience, I have found that carrying women uphill or up many flights of stairs can be survivable by taking slower smaller steps. I really take my time climbing the hill and often find little excuses to stop and look at things so I can rest while still carrying her. For example I might stop and comment on a particular flower or tree or the view, etc. These rests can make a huge difference as well as taking slower, smaller baby steps up the hill.

Also, I have never offended my rider when I've approached a hill and said things like, "Oh good, a hill. I love having my cardio challenged while I carry such a beautiful rider to the top." They feel complimented and get clued in that going up hill is hard so if they hear you huffing and puffing it's not a problem. This is good in case you end up needing to put her down. She won't be offended now that she knows hills are a challenge.

Sometimes I might even say a comment such as, "This hill looks fairly steep but I don't want to fail you or put you down. I may need your help though. Together with your words of encouragement, and my determination and even a few little heel kicks from you for good measure I'm sure the two of us as a team can be successful in climbing this hill and any other hills." This now creates a wonderful dynamic where the rider and mount are truly a team with a common goal... to get to the top of the hill or the stairs with her still riding you. It's fantastic because she might even start urging you on verbally and she now completely understands that climbing a hill is a lot more difficult and she will be less offended if you can't make it all the way. If you fail, then this is now an excuse for more practice through more riding. You simply can't lose.

Hope this helps.

Why not tell her the truth, that she is not heavy, you just need to work on endurance for going up hills, would like to practice this with her, and that any guy whoever thinks she is too heavy simply needs to work on his strength, endurance, and ESPECIALLY his attitude?

Good luck. You have a better idea than I how she may react to this.

Re: I need some advice

No matter what you do, going uphill with a rider on your shoulders will always be an extenuating challenge. However, Mountforever's last advice, which is to try and work "as a team" with your rider is really a brilliant idea! Be careful what you wish for, though : Even a kind rider may enjoy that kind of "teamwork" where She is just on top, sitting and kicking, while you'll be drudging and slaving and suffering underneath ...

But it might be what you're craving for ...... smile

I would!

Re: I need some advice

Hi equidum,

You are very correct when you say it opens opportunities for domination. I enjoy when the rider takes control and so I see the idea of working as a team to be an opportunity to give her permission to kick me and encourage me up the hill. I totally love it but others might not. I've had riders even decide to grab a branch to whip me as they ride me up the hill. Their new dominant attitude might not have occurred if I hadn't had the teamwork discussion with them. ha ha

Re: I need some advice

Take a break! I had carried uphill a lot of times, most with riders simular or heavier then me! For example I carried Ralph (~100kg 220lbs) Up a quit steep hill and ~100 meters long. Short steps and slow speed is, as said earlier here. good. But I reached only halfway. I was puffing hard!! But my shoulders was OK, so I made a break for 2-3 minutes, with Ralph sitting on my shoulders. When my breathin get normal again, I continiu the walk up! At the top I could stay a few minutes for looking at the view! He liked that ride!! So I had to do it one more time smile So make a break, let the rider enjoy when standing stil, by turning around slowly.

I wouldn't mind booking a ride with shouldertaxi. He's probably a lot more fun than riding in a London taxi... and a lot cheaper too!
