I just thought now that 2012 is nearly over it is time to pause and remember Webshots - at one time the greatest photo sharing site in the world. Approximately one month ago the old site finally closed down and has been replaced by a new site called "Smile by Webshots". With the closure came 670 million photos consigned to the dustbin forever - although most users would not even remember their pictures being in there the way the Internet has evolved in the past 6 years or so. As the site had not been updated in years, there had been nothing new added for a long, long time. Essentially no-one has been posting pictures there since about 2007 when the world suddently became infatuated with sites like Flickr (vastly inferior to webshots in all ways) and the teens and college kids who were so profilic in WS suddenly found those dreadful social media monoliths - firstly the horrible Myspace and now Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Although photos of interest to our group here are far more numerous now thanks to these new sites, the quality of pictures and picture taking has declined dramatically. Whilst I admire the patience of all those who locate pictures off these sites and repost here, to me it is not the same. Most of these pics off these sites are so low resolution that I have to squint to see what is going on. No-one cares about good quality pictures any more it seems in this fickle world.

So again, farewell to Webshots - another victim of the social networking craze - as one of the old-timers here, I will always remember those heady days of 2004/5/6 when the site was at its peak - gone but not forgotten.

Merry Xmas and happy new Year to all in here and thanks everyone who has contributed and has kept this group well and truly alive. Thanks to the Administrators Nick and Gunde for keeping things going so well, and to my old friend Louie (who has now departed the scene sadly) It has not been a good year health-wise for me and I suffered a heart attack earlier this month - I have had a double-heart bypass and are now resting comfortably at home. I hope to recover fully and am grateful for a 2nd chance at life.

Regards to all my old friends in here and the newcomers who have helped keep things going as well.

Hi Scotty

I totally agree with all your comments about Webshots - it was a lifeline in those days with some excellent pictures. RIP.

I was sorry to learn of your heart problems. As you say, you've been given a second chance now. Take it easy and continue to enjoy the efforts of others who have taken up the reins of shoulder riding on this site.

I do hope you have a happy Christmas and all the best for 2013.

I'm so sorry to hear about your health. I hope you will be fully recovered soon and see you back in action, we have missed your presence here.

I too find it sad and agitating that people in charge of former websites such as Webshots do not take their responsibility to create a backup and archive before they close down definitely. Each of these communities has a special place in internet history. As you wrote, Scotty, they are gone but not forgotten and they deserve to be accessible also for future generations to enjoy. They can look back and see how internet was used by the pioneers - their parents and grand parents. If comparing with, say, books, newspapers, magazines, they are all there. But internet is necessary not there. The closest I can find is the Internet archive (www.archive.org (New Window) ) which can present snapshots of websites as from 1996 and forward.

I am also sorry to have heard about your health issues..I wish all the best, for you my friend..

Both you and Louie were my very first people that I had met on the internet way back in 2000 or 2001 I do believe..

Yes,a lot of things have changed over the years for each and every one of us..

Scotty,you are right about webshots in that era of the mid 2000s..Nothing I believe will ever come close to finding so many shoulder ride photos,of such high quality images..

However,let's not under estimate Instagram..It is the greatest photo sharing site in the world, for finding shoulder ride pics..Nothing comes close..We know the picture quality is not good(in most photos)but there are at any given day,dozens of shoulder ride pics,using different search terms..In a 24 hour period(1 day)using pool,or brother, as search terms,you will find on average around 10 photos..Yes,if only the photos were a little bit better quality,but we can't be too greedy when it comes to finding shoulder ride pics..

Now,on to personal things with me and our groups here..A few members have e-mailed me asking why I don't post anymore pics here..I know I have be warned about what types of pics that I post time and time again,up untill I learned a valuable lesson,in my membership being suspended..This is my favourite site in the world,and for me not being permitted to enter it was like losing my best friend,or something of that nature..The pics that I am talking about were of sister on brother's shoulders,but also,with a little child on top of the sister(3 high)..I would get so excited finding pretty older sisters riding their younger bro's in the pool,that I actually would not notice the little child on top of the sister's shoulders..Nick and Gunde were right in suspending me on this matter..I did not have an excuse,as I time and time again,would make the same mistakes and adding photos with little kids..

However,Nick and Gunde have made a wrong,in not having me as a bonus member,cause being active in these groups for almost 14 years or so,and thousands upon thousands of posts,but not giving me my BONUS MEMBERSHIP back,is truly uncalled for..Nick and Gunde..TWO WRONGS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT:(

I will not repeat my message for Scotty here, I´ll leave it in the admin section.

You gave us much more admin work than all the other members together. We use our spare time to manage this site, so when we asked you politely to stop posting pics with small children, but you didn´t stop, we were forced to take actions.

If you can prove to us, that you are able to follow the rules, you might get the bonus membership back, but you will not get it easily.
