Reins or Harnesses
Hello!
Looking to get a carrier and riders perspective as to their experiences when they have used reins while shoulder riding or in all fours riding.
Carriers - did you find that it was easier to understand exactly what and where your rider wanted you to go?
Riders - did you find that it was easier to communicate with your mount without having to talk to carrier as much?

Surprised to see this thread empty as many people here enjoy gears(reins) either to ride or be ridden.
I'll answer your ques from rider's perspective with little experience I have.
Note: the ride where I used reins happened when I was your younger and had not much idea about "shoulder riding" and stuff, although I believed that ride sparked my interest in shoulder and all4s riding. This happened with a distant relative and it was actually his idea to use reins(made of rope, not the professional one).
Coming to the use/ advantages I think reins give is , firstly, in terms of communication, Yes, it is easier with reins to communicate as it gives you more options like, for example if reins are being used to tell the direction so now legs are free to give direction on speed or start/stop and also rider has something to hold onto. So in non-verbal communication, it is definitely helpful.
Other is that it helps both rider and carrier to get in respective headspace as it is more realistic way to ride. Reins disallow carriers to speak which again give a realistic touch.

Bridle with reins, including saddle with stirrups.
These accessories make the session more realistic, because a horsewoman feels she is riding and leading a horse; and ponyboy feels he is a true horse dominated and controlled by a horsewoman.
"Animals do not speak" or "Horses do not speak", is its added value because bit does not allow a horse to speak even if he wants it.

In my experience the use of reins and bridles, or saddles is most common for riding on all4's and piggyback riding.
For shoulder riding, this seems to be rare, i suppose most poeple consider it redundant since the rider can directly grab the carrier's head thus gaining all the support and control they need. Although you can find some video clips of shoulding riding with rains too. Personally I think putting a bridle (or a gag) in the carrier's mouth could be a nice kinky addition to the game.
